The first kidney transplant in the UK was carried out in Edinburgh in 1961 (Read more about the history of transplantation in Edinburgh). Since then many hundreds of patients have experienced the benefits of kidney transplantation in the Edinburgh Renal Transplant Unit. In 1995 the Renal Transplant Unit joined with the Scottish Liver Transplant Unit, so that the efforts of the transplant surgeons, doctors, nurses and other staff could be combined. In 2000, the unit's first combined kidney and pancreatic transplant was performed. |
